Young to the DL; Stauffer recalled

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres announced today the club has placed right-handed pitcher Chris Young on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 25) due to a strained left oblique muscle. The team has recalled righthander Tim Stauffer from Triple-Portland.

The 25-year-old Tim Stauffer, who will start today's series finale at Houston, is 5-4 with a 5.34 ERA (58 ER/97.2 IP) in 20 games (15 starts) with Portland in 2007. As a starter this year, he is 5-4 with a 4.74 ERA (47 ER/89.1 IP).

Stauffer won his only 2006 appearance with the Padres, allowing two runs (one earned) over 6.0 innings as an emergency starter for Chan Ho Park on Aug. 21, 2006 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made his debut in 2005, posting a 3-6 record with a 5.33 ERA (48 ER/81.0 IP) in 15 games (14 starts). His combined Major League record is 4-6 with a 5.07 ERA (49 ER/87.0 IP) in 16 games (15 starts).

Chris Young, 28, suffered the injury on Tuesday in Colorado when he left the game after two innings. He leads Major League Baseball with a 1.82 ERA (24 ER/118.2 IP), .184 batting average against and 0.73 home ERA. Young is 9-3 over his 20 starts and ranks fourth in the National League with a .750 winning percentage. He also ranks among the NL leaders in road ERA (5th, 3.02), strikeouts (6th, 114) and strikeouts per nine innings (3rd, 8.6).

Young is in his second season with the Padres. He was acquired from the Texas Rangers along with first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and outfielder Terrmel Sledge in exchange for pitchers Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka and catcher Billy Killian on January 4, 2006. Young has a career Major League record of 35-17 with a 3.43 ERA (190 ER/499.0 IP) in 89 starts with Texas (2004-2005) and San Diego (2006-2007). He has struck out 442 and walked 163.
