Padres trade for Milton Bradley

San Diego, CA-- The San Diego Padres acquired outfielder Milton Bradley and cash considerations from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-handed pitcher Andrew Brown.

To make room for Milton Bradley on the 40-man roster, the Padres designated left-handed pitcher Sean Thompson for assignment.

The switch-hitting Bradley, 29, has played in 19 games for Oakland this season, hitting .292 (19-for-65) with four doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, six runs scored and eight walks. He was designated for assignment by the A's on June 21.

Last season with Oakland, Bradley hit .276 (97-for-351) with 14 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 52 RBI, 53 runs scored and 51 walks. He batted .300 (77-for-257) with 11 homers and 44 RBI after the All-Star break and then hit .323 (10-for-31) with three home runs and seven RBI in seven postseason contests.

In 649 career Major League games, Bradley has hit .271 (625-for-2309) with 133 doubles, 12 triples, 70 homers, 292 RBI, 331 runs scored and 286 walks for the Montreal Expos (2000-2001), Cleveland Indians (2001-2003), Los Angeles Dodgers (2004-2005) and Oakland Athletics (2006-2007). In 11 playoff games, he has a career postseason average of .310 (13-for-42) with three doubles, four homers, eight RBI, six runs scored and five walks for the Dodgers (2004 NLDS) and Athletics (2006, ALDS and ALCS).

Andrew Brown, 26, is 2-3 with a 2.78 ERA (11 ER/35.2 IP) in 32 relief appearances for Triple-A Portland this season. He was acquired by San Diego from the Cleveland Indians along with third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff in exchange for Josh Barfield on November 8, 2006. Brown made his Major League debut with the Indians last September, pitching in nine games and allowing six hits and four runs over 10.0 innings (3.60 ERA).

Thompson, 24, is 4-7 with a 3.57 ERA (35 ER/88.1 IP) in 16 starts for Double-A San Antonio this season. He has a career minor league record of 38-33 with a 3.54 ERA (265 ER/673.2 IP) in 124 games (122 starts). Thompson was selected by the Padres in the fifth round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.
