A.J. Davidiuk debuts; Josh Howard streaking

Ray Chang homered in Portland. Josh Howard has proven to be a spark at the top of the order for the Lake Elsinore Storm. A.J. Davidiuk makes his debut with Fort Wayne. Eugene has seen the last of Wade LeBlanc.

Portland lost 6-5 to Las Vegas (Dodgers)

Ray Chang got the start at shortstop and hit a solo homer in the ninth inning, his first with Portland and second of the year. Chang, who had never played above Low-A, is hitting .235 in limited action with Portland, going 4-for-17. Three of his four hits have gone for extra bases. He did commit his second error in Triple-A and had ten in Low-A over 19 games.

Jack Cust went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, a homer, two runs scored and two RBI's. The outfielder has reached base in nine straight games, going 11-for-27 with nine walks, including seven walks in his last four games. His 92 walks lead all of minor league baseball. Cust has also scored in five straight games, touching home plate seven times over that span.

Lake Elsinore lost 6-4 to Lancaster (Diamondbacks)

Josh Howard reached base four times with two hits and two walks in five plate appearances. He also stole his 11th base in 13 attempts; he had been caught twice in a row before Sunday. Over his last 11 games, Howard is hitting .378 with ten runs scored, five extra base hits and six walks. The left-handed hitter is batting .351 off right-handed pitching but has just one hit in 16 at bats versus southpaws.

Chris Jaile was pounded to the tune of six runs on a season-high ten hits and a walk over six innings of work. Fort he fourth time in five starts he has given up a homer but just one of seven surrendered have come with men on base. All six runs scored in the first three innings and the opposition is hitting .413 off him in the second inning over ten starts.

Fort Wayne lost 3-0 to Southwest Michigan (Devil Rays)

A.J. Davidiuk made his debut with the Wizards and collected one hit in three at bats while playing shortstop. His hit was one of three the club managed on the day. A 29th round draft pick by the San Diego Padres this season, the Furman alumni hit .362 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI. He finished his Furman career ranked first with 54 doubles, second in hits with 264, fourth in runs (155) and runs batted in (147) and ninth in home runs with 24. With the Arizona Padres, Davidiuk hit .279 with four doubles, one triple and 11 RBI in 17 games.

Grant Varnell dropped his ninth decision of the year, tossing five innings of two run ball while giving up seven hits and a walk. The right-hander had been moved to the pen for four games, going 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA. As a starter, Varnell dropped to 2-8 with a 4.54 ERA. It is the tenth time in 15 starts he has given up seven or more hits. The opposition is hitting .317 off him for the season.

Eugene lost 5-4 to Vancouver (A's)

In his final start as an Emerald, Wade LeBlanc tossed four innings of three run ball. He allowed a season-high seven hits and walked two, getting behind in the count after a solid first inning. He came into the game with one run allowed over his last 11 innings, giving up just five hits over those three outings. He hadn't walked more than one in any appearance and had given up 12 hits in first 17 innings with Eugene. LeBlanc was promoted to Fort Wayne after the game.

Jesus Lopez went 2-for-4 with two RBI's, delivering a two-run single in the Ems four-run sixth. Lopez bobbled a ball attempting to turn a double play but was able to turn two the next time the ball came his way. Lopez snapped a 1-for-14 streak and matched his RBI output over his last 11 games with Eugene. He is hitting .222 with runners in scoring position, collecting just his second hit in that situation.

Nate Culp has also been moved up to Fort Wayne to take the spots, along with LeBlanc, of traded prospects Joel Santo and Fabian Jimenez.
