Tribe Has Signed 27 Of 53 Selections

Brad Grant, the Indians' assistant director of scouting, said the organization is pleased with its overall draft despite not having its own No. 1 pick this year. The Indians loaded up on pitchers, especially right-handers, in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. Cleveland looked to the college ranks for help early -- its first six selections were college players from all parts of the nation.

"Most people focus on a club's first round selection, but the talent in the Major Leagues comes from all different places and all different rounds in the draft," Grant said. "While we hope to add some quality players to the system from the top of the draft, we also hope that our middle and later round players along with some of our non-drafted free agents make an impact on our system."
