New options for Padres' pitching staff

Traditionally, the Rule 5 draft is the province of young, hard-throwing pitchers and fleet-footed position players whose tools make a team believe they can shield the prospect on the major-league roster for a full season in the hopes of developing a strong contributor several years down the road. The 2005 Padres took a very different path.

With their pick, the Padres took 29-year old Seth Etherton, a veteran of 21 major league starts with appearances with the Reds, Angels and Athletics over the last five seasons. In a deal worked out in the Dewon Brazelton deal completed yesterday, they also secured reliever Steve Andrade from Toronto's system by way of the Devil Rays.
