Padres promote Clay Hensley, option Ben Johnson

The San Diego Padres purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Clay Hensley from Triple-A Portland on Monday while also sending Ben Johnson back to Portland. Mark Loretta and Phil Nevin were also reinstated from the disabled list. Rudy Seanez was placed on the 15-day DL and releivers Dennys Reyes and Miguel Asencio were put on waivers.

Clay Hensley has been dominant with the Portland Beavers, despite a 2-2 record. The right-hander has allowed two runs or less in ten of his 14 starts.

"Hensley is a smaller guy that flies under the scout's radar because of his size," Jeff Kingston, the Padres' Director of Baseball Operations, replied in a recent interview done just before the weekend. "He pitches very aggressively, and has really good command of his fastball. He can put his sinker at the knees consistently, which is what makes him so tough. He throws three pitches, fastball, sinker and has an average change.

"He came into spring training this year with something to prove, and was painting the corners with a 94 mph fastball the first day. After a tough April in 2004, he was our best pitcher in Mobile last year. He's on our radar and if he was on the on the forty man roster we might have already seen him in San Diego. We think he can definitely help us in middle relief or as a starter."

Ben Johnson, 24, played in seven games with the Padres, batting .143 (2-for-14) with two doubles and three RBI.

Dennys Reyes, 27, is 3-2 with a 5.15 ERA (25 ER/43.2 IP) in 36 games (one start) for the Padres this season, while Miguel Asencio, 24, made three starts with Portland going 0-3 with a 9.42 ERA (15 ER/14.1 IP) in 2005.
