Padres trade Quintero for Redding
Justin Germano received his chance to secure the spot on Sunday but allowed five runs in four innings of work and the Padres believed Tim Stauffer needed some more time in the minors.
So, on Monday, they sent catcher Humberto Quintero, a solid defensive catcher with a cannon arm and an emerging bat, to the Houston Astros for right-hander Tim Redding.
Redding, 27, went 5-7 with a 5.72 ERA in 2004, a year after going 10-14 with a 3.68 ERA. His troubles a year ago led to him being sent down to Triple-A where he went 1-3 with a 6.04 ERA in five starts.
Redding combines a two and four-seam fastball with a curveball and slider. After compiling a 43-17 record in the minors, the Astros believed they had found a cornerstone of their franchise. Then control problems set in.
Quintero hit .250 in 23 games with San Diego last year. He spent the majority of the year in Triple-A Portland where he hit .317 in 68 games.
Quintero earned praise from several Big League pitchers last year for his defense behind the plate and ability to throw out baserunners.
With Ramon Hernandez firmly entrenched as the starter and Miguel Ojeda set to back him up, Quintero was tabbed for the Portland roster.
