Jake Peavy rehabs in Mobile

Jake Peavy

Mobile, Ala.-- The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx spoiled the return of former BayBear Jake Peavy to Mobile on Sunday night, defeating the BayBears 5-1 to hand Mobile its third straight loss. Peavy, a Mobile native who was on a Major League injury rehabilitation assignment due to a strained ligament in his right forearm, threw 77 pitches in a pain-free outing and is expected to start for San Diego against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

West Tenn took a 1-0 lead against Jake Peavy in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Aron Weston. Mike Mallory's two-run home run in the fourth made it 3-0.

Mobile scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of doubles by Kennard Jones and Greg Sain to make it 3-1.

West Tenn answered with an unearned run against Peavy in the fifth to go ahead 4-1. Peavy left the game when he reached his pitch limit with two outs in the fifth. He allowed seven hits and four runs (three earned) with two walks and four strikeouts.

"I did not have command of my fastball, but I felt good," said Peavy. "I wish I could have given the team a better chance to win, but I was able to reach the goal of 75 pitches and tonight's start was what I needed to get me ready for the start against Kansas City."

West Tenn's Matt Craig closed out the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh.

The teams close out the series on Monday at 7:05 PM. Steve Watkins (3-3, 4.21) will start for Mobile. Angel Guzman gets the call for West Tenn.
