Sain-tastic; Storm win in Petco
Greg Sain homered twice and drove in three runs for the BayBears. Sain has now homered six times in the last four days, spanning five games. He has driven in nine runs during that same span and is hitting .500, 8-for-16. He had been in a 7-for-59 slump entering play four days ago. His 21 homers lead the Southern League but his 44 RBI's, which lead the team, are 15 behind the league leader.
Brian Whitaker pitched into the eighth before allowing his second run of the night. He left with two out in the eighth and a man on first. He has limited the opposition to three runs or less in seven of his ten Mobile starts after giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks on Sunday.
Jake Gautreau was promoted to Portland on Sunday after the game. Gautreau's arrival could mean the end of a prospect within the system as the Padres begin to cut some of those not performing.
Lake Elsinore won 5-4
Michael Johnson, the Padres' second-round pick in 2002, could miss up to six weeks with a dislocated right kneecap. Johnson leads the Storm in home runs (11) and RBIs (41).
The Storm played in Petco Park on Sunday, the back half of a Major-Minor League doubleheader.
Paul McAnulty hit a first inning homer to spark the Storm. It was his first homer since June 3, the day he started a 12 game tear. Lake Elsinore can only hope that happens again. Josh Carter knocked in two as well with a pair of RBI doubles. He has RBI's in consecutive games.
Jon Huber went six plus innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits and a walk. Huber cruised through the first five innings before allowing runs in the sixth and seventh. With the win it pushes the All-Star to 7-4.
Fort Wayne lost 8-4
Brett Bonvechio continues to perform for Fort Wayne. Bonvechio extended his hitting streak to nine with a 2-for-5 afternoon with an RBI, going 13-for-34 over the stretch with three doubles, two homers and six RBI's. Brett was the player to be named later in the Henri Stanley trade.
Juan Ciriaco has a six game hitting streak after a 2-for-4 day with an RBI. He is 10-for-26 with three multi-hit games and he has raised his average from south of the border, .202, to a more respectable .224.
The last eight runs that Aaron Coonrod has given up have been unearned. The last run he was responsible for came seven games and 10 innings ago.
Jared Wells, in his 14th start of the year, had his worst outing to date. Wells allowed six runs, all earned, on ten hits, both season highs, in five innings. It started with a leadoff homer from South Bend and ended with a three run fifth. Wells has given up five runs or more on four separate occasions.
Eugene lost 10-7
The Emeralds committed seven errors in a very sloppy game where Salem-Keizer had four of their own. Five Emerald runs were unearned while three Salem-Keizer runs went unearned. Brett Burnham led the way with three errors for the Ems. Those numbers don't include the two hit batsmen by Jonathon Ellis or the two wild pitches thrown by Brian Burks.
Ellis took the loss when he hit two batters and the next batter followed with a three run homer. Burks followed him and a wild pitch from him, followed by a throwing error brought two runs across an inning later.
William Ponce got the start and went 5.2 innings. He had a 7-2 lead heading into the sixth inning before three runs came across against him, one coming in when Ellis had an inherited runner score. Ponce allowed five runs total, four earned, on eight hits and one walk. Ponce also committed an error.
Mark McRoberts did not have a hit on Sunday and is hitless in seven at bats in Eugene but scored three runs on the night. He walked twice and got on due to an error.
Jose Lobaton hit a two run homer to right field, his first of the season and the only earned runs the Ems scored on the night.
