Germano wins Major League debut

Justin Germano wins <br>his major league debut.

Brian Giles used a powerful swing and a powerful slide to help the Padres snap the Phillies four-game winning streak. The Padres, behind rookie Justin Germano, came away with a 9-6 win thanks in part to Giles breaking up a potential double play with a strong slide into the plate. Giles also walked three times and hit his fifth homerun of the season. The win keeps the Padres percentage points behind the Dodgers in the NL West, while the Phillies drop 1/2 game behind the Marlins in the NL East.

It wasn't easy and for a while, it looked like Mike Lieberthal opened the door and Germano wound up the winner in a wild 9-6 game.

Germano pitched five innings and gave up four earned runs on five hits. The Padres trailed 4-3 in the top of the sixth, but loaded the bases on walks. Jay Payton scored from first base on the play as the Padres went ahead 5-4.

Josh Hancock, who was just recalled from AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre, started for the Phillies and allowed three runs in five innings.

The Padres got on the board first when Marlon Byrd.

After Germano shut down the Phillies with little trouble in the first two innings, they got to him in the bottom of the third. With one out, Byrd walked and Placido Polanco at second base.

Mark Loretta doubled and after issuing an intentional walk to Giles, Telemaco lost the strike zone and walked Nevin to load the bases. Klesko followed with a single to right to score two runs, pushing the Padres lead to 7-4.

The Phillies threatened in both the seventh and eighth innings, but came up short. Trevor Hoffman when Burrell singled to drive home Rollins, who had doubled to lead off the inning.

The Padres had plated two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by Nevin and pinch-hitter Terrence Long.

The series wraps up Sunday afternoon with Brian Lawrence (6-2, 4.56).
