More runs than hits proves a success for Padres
The Padres tied the game at 1-1 in the first inning when Giles and Nevin hit consecutive doubles. After falling behind 2-1, the Padres took the lead for good in the fourth by way of a ground out to score a run and a Ramon Hernandez double.
Five of the six Padres' hits were doubles.
"This was the most productive night I can remember with so few hits," manager Bruce Bochy said.
Jake Peavy moved to 3-2 on the season and has been on the losing of several other games where he deserved a victory. He has not allowed more than two earned runs in any start this season. The bullpen blew two leads and forced him into no decisions earlier this year.
Brandon Puffer made his debut for the Padres by pitching the ninth inning. Puffer had a stretch of 20.2 scoreless innings pitched for the Portland Beavers, the Padres Triple-A affiliate. Puffer replaced Antonio Osuna on the roster. Osuna went on the disabled list with a groin injury.
"Wherever they tell me to pitch, that's what I'll do," said Puffer. "I guess that will dictate where I end up." Notes:
On Friday when the Padres play the Cubs, fans in attendance will receive commemorative pins to honor the 1984 season and the Padres' come-from-behind victory over the Cubs in the NLCS and the first World Series appearance in San Diego Padres history.
To help commemorate the 1984 National League Champion Padres, the team will be wearing throwback jerseys from the historic season. Kool and The Gang will be on hand to perform the National Anthem.
