MadFriars' Daily Farm Report July 8

Cody Decker

Two teams end up walking off the field after a brutal losses. The Ems fall one short. The AZL Padres give up 14 in the first three innings. Only the Chihuahuas won on this dreary day.

Chihuahuas 4 – Alburquerque Isotopes 3

Key Statistics: RHP Billy Buckner 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 5 Ks; 2B Jace Peterson 1-4, 2B, RS, BB; 1B Cody Decker 2-3, RS, RBI, BB; C Rocky Gale 2-3, RS, BB.

Prospect Watch I turned on the game to hear that “Smith” was pitching for El Paso and got excited that Burch Smith was finally off the disabled lis. Nope, Chris Smith. While Chris is about a decade older (33 years old), he was excellent in his first appearance out of the pen. He allowed only one hit over three innings while striking out five. In three appearances since joining the Chihuahuas Smith has struck out 19 in just 14 innings while posting a 2.57 ERA.

No game for San Antonio as Renfroe is hopefully recovering

Storm 5 – Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 6 (11 innings)

Key Statistics: RHP Coby Cowgill 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 Ks; DH Mallex Smith 3-5, 2B, 2 RS, BB, 3 SB (61 between both Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore ); C Dane Phillips 3-6, 2B, 2 RS, RBI; 3B Gabrial Quintana 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, BB.

Prospect Watch After getting hit hard for the first time in the Cal League, Tayron Guerrero returned the very next day to set the side down in order striking out two. He has allowed a run in just one of his eight appearances in the Cal League this year... Brandon Alger blew his third save this year despite striking out his most hitters in a game in over a month. He struck out the side but did walk two. It was only the second run he has allowed over the last month.

TinCaps 4 – Great Lakes Loons 5

Key Statistics: RHP Ronald Herrara 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 Ks; RF Franmil Reyes 2-4, RS; SS Josh VanMeter 2-3, 2B, RS, 2 RBI, BB.

Prospect Watch Make it two straight multi-hit games for Franmil Reyes and four in his last six. He is batting .321 in the month of July... Josh VanMeter has a .829 OPS over the last two weeks. After striking out 21 times and walking just twice in May, VanMeter has just 14 strikeouts and 10 walks since.

Ems 3 – Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4

Key Statistics: RHP Thomas Dorminy 2 IP, H, K; RHP Zach Lemond 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, K; SS Trea Turner 0-3, BB, RS; DH Franchy Cordero 3-4, 3B, 2B Jalen Goree 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI.

Prospect Watch Franchy Cordero is back on the prospect map. He has nine hits over his last four game including a double, triple and two home runs. He can run, hit for average, power, and hes only 19. His defense is still awful, but the Padres believe he can stick at shortstop... SS Trea Turner is in an 0-20 slump.

AZL Padres 1 – AZL Dodgers 17

Key Statistics: CF Michael Gettys 1-4, K; C Ricardo Valenzuela 1-1, 2B.
