TinCaps Lose 3-1

FORT WAYNE, IN - Being a manager at the lower levels of the minor leagues is similar to being engaged in a never ending game of Whack-A-Mole; once you solve a problem what you thought you had conquered pops up.

Struggling with inconsistent pitching and defense that has made more errors than any other team in the minors with 153 errors in 84 games the one aspect of the game the TinCaps have been able to do all season is hit.

However tonight, as has been the case in the past four games where Fort Wayne has only scored four runs, the offense wasn't there but pitching and defense were as the TinCaps lost their seventh straight game.

"It's definitely a challenge trying to find the right balance," said Michael Collins, in his first year as a manager of a full season team.

"You know the mantra in baseball is it's a long season of good and bad patches and in the end you just hope that there are more of the good than the bad."

The Whitecaps got on the board first and with the exception of third baseman Dustin Peterson's RBI double in the fifth, the TinCaps never mounted a serious offensive threat.

In addition to pitching well and having an errorless game, a rarity as the overall numbers will attest, catcher Ryan Miller gunned down all three runners that attempted to steal against him but also struck out four times.

"As much as we all pay attention to the hitting at the end of the day that position is about defense," said Collins, a minor league catcher for ten seasons in the minors.

"It's not the type of night he wants at the plate but defense is something that you have to bring with you every night."

TinCap Notes: 3B Dustin Peterson is leading the organization with 66 RBI...RHP Cody Hebner will start tomorrow as the Padres are going to try to re-convert him back to a starting pitcher. In 2012 he was a starter for the TinCaps.
