MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: June 15

Only El Paso prevails on Father's Day as the big club and three of the four affiliates that were in action on Sunday lose.

Chihuahuas 5 - Round Rock Express 4 12 innings

Key Statistics:2B Brooks Conrad 2-4, HR (14), RBI, BB: RF Jeff Francoeur 2-5, 2B; DH Travis Buck 2-4, 2B; 3B Jonathan Galvez 1-3, 3B, BB; C Rocky Gale 1-4, RBI, BB; CF Rico Noel 1-4, RBI, BB; RHP Donn Roach 7.0 IP 5 H R ER BB 4 Ks; LHP Bobby LaFromboise (BS,3) 1.1 IP 4 H 3 R 3 ER K; RHP Michael Nix (W, 3-2) 2.0 IP H 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch:Jonathan Galvez led off the twelfth inning with a triple and two intentional walks by Round Rock's pitcher loaded the bases. LF Alex Castellanos then got the game winning walk-off single, his only hit of the day, to give El Paso the victory and break their two game losing streak...Rocky Gale is considered one of the best defensive catchers in the organization and is quietly having a good year at the plate hitting .324/.378/412. He hasn't gotten as much playing time with Adam Moore having a big year as the starter, but if Gale can hit he has a chance, the defense is there....Very strong outing by Donn Roach, who now has allowed only a single earned run in two starts and might be a candidate for the big club's rotation.

Corpus Christi Hooks 7 - Missions 2

Key Statistics: 2B Adam Buschini 0-2, 2 BB; RHP Josh Geer (L, 2-7) 7.0 IP 5 H 3 R 0 ER BB 3 Ks; RHP Adys Portillo 1.0 IP H 2 R 2 ER 2 BB K.

Prospect Watch:Josh Geer had a relatively good outing after three bad ones, but as has been the case for much of this year, the Missions' offense didn't give him much to work with. This season Geer has been much better in the friendly confines of Nelson Wolff Stadium, where he has an ERA of 2.30 than on the road where he is at 6.06...San Antonio is hitting .237 as a team, the worst of all four of the full-season squads...In his first 20 outings this year Adys Portillo gave up six earned runs, in his last five he has given up seven earned runs as his command has faded from earlier in the season with multiple walks in his last three single inning appearances.

The Storm are on the Cal League All-Star Break. Games resume on June 19

Bowling Green Hot Rods 12 -TinCaps 3

Key StatisticsCF Mallex Smith 2-4; DH Dustin Peterson 2-4; 1B Jake Bauers 1-2, 2B; SS Josh VanMeter 2-3; RHP Walker Weickel (L, 1-8) 4.0 IP 11 H 5 R 3 ER 3 Ks HR; RHP Coby Cowgill 2.0 IP 5 H 4 R 2 ER BB 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch:Simply not a great day for the TinCaps' defense and starting pitching, something that has given them problems all year. Today Fort Wayne made four errors to give them 125 in 69 games; which leads the Midwest League. Walker Weickel, a 2011 supplemental first round selection in his second season in the Midwest League, record moved to 1-8 with a 5.98 ERA. He has given up three or more earned runs in eight of his 13 starts this season...Josh VanMeter might finally be starting to turn it around with a .324/.375/.351 slash line in June, which is much better than his .200 batting average in May and the .221 in April.

Spokane Indians 5 - Emeralds 3

Key Statistics:RF Nick Schultz 1-3, BB; 3B Felipe Blanco 2-4, 2B, HR (1) RBI; RHP Andrew Lockett (L,0-1) 4 H 4 R 4 ER 3 BB.

Prospect Watch The Emeralds are still winless on the season as they dropped their their straight game. The good news is that none of the 2014 draft picks, who should be the key players this year for the EMs have arrived yet and the bad news is this is the second straight day where a fairly highly regarded pitching prospect has not pitched well. Lockett began the season in Fort Wayne and pitched well in his only outing before some arm soreness sent him back to extended. As with Michael Kelly yesterday, Lockett has some great size at six-foot-five, 225 lbs. and was very well thought off by many pundits including ESPN's Keith Law, who had him as one of the Padres' Top 10 prospects. As opposed to Kelly, this outing should be more of an aberration.
