MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: May 10

Robbie Erlin and Justin Hancock both continued to make a case for promotion to the next level with strong performances in a winning cause. John Hussey's post-promotion results weren't as positive as the Storm squandered a lead they built against rehabbing big-leaguer Zach Greinke.

Tucson Padres 6 Albuquerque Isotopes 2

Key Statistics: CF Jaff Decker 3-4, 2B, HR(4), 3RBI; C Rene Rivera 2-3, 2B, BB; LHP Robbie Erlin 5.2 IP, 7H, 1R, 4K, 1BB

Prospect Watch: Robbie Erlin had his longest start of the year and held the Isotopes in check nicely. The 22-year-old lefty gave up only one run over 5.2 innings while striking out four. Although his strikeout rate and walk rates thus far in Triple-A still lag well behind his career numbers, he is getting more grounders than in the past. The trick will be for him to find the balance in how he works hitters at this level and the next. … With catcher Jason Hagerty on the disabled list, veteran Rene Rivera is on a roll. The 29-year-old from Puerto Rico has had four straight multi-hit games to raise his season line to 372/433/462. With Yasmani Grandal returning to the majors in just over two weeks, Rivera is making his case to both the Padres and other clubs that might need minor league insurance. … Jaff Decker owns a seven-game hitting streak. In that time, he has hit .458, though he continues to strike out in well north of 20 percent of his plate appearances.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 14 Lake Elsinore Storm 12

Key Statistics: C Robert Kral 4-4, 2 2B, 2 HR(6), BB 5RBI, 4R; RF Yeison Asencio 3-5, 2RBI, 4 R; RHP John Hussey 4IP, 7H, 7ER, 1K, 0BB, 2WP, HBP

Prospect Watch: Robert Kral had himself quite a night, building on a remarkably strong season thus far. The left-handed hitting catcher blasted two doubles and a pair of homers. With Austin Hedges struggling thus far at the plate and now on the DL, Kral has been beating on pitches all year. He sports a 348/469/758 line in 81 plate appearances. … John Hussey's strange trip continues as the 26-year-old made his first professional appearance above Low-A. The Aussie, who had been out of affiliated ball for two years before rejoining the club late this spring, was tagged hard. Hussey gave up seven runs over just four innings of work, a departure from his solid showing across 17 innings for Ft. Wayne. While there was some clamoring for Joe Ross to take this spot in the rotation, don't be surprised if the Padres wait on that move until the club gets things going on the win-loss side a bit more. … Yeison Asencio has had three straight three-hit games and is flirting with a .300 average for the first time all year. After striking out a lot early in the year, the uber-aggressive righthanded slugger has only two Ks in his last 55 plate appearances, though he's also turned into a singles hitter in that time. Watch for him to really integrate the power and contact in the coming weeks.

Ft. Wayne TinCaps 6 Great Lakes 2

Key Statistics: 3B Gabriel Quintana 2-3, 2B, BB, 2SB; RHP Justin Hancock 7IP, 7H, 0R, 4K, 0BB

Prospect Watch: In a rotation full of first-rounders, Justin Hancock continues to be Fort Wayne's most effective starter. The 22-year-old righty worked a career-high seven innings without giving up a run. After issuing too many walks early in the year, he has locked in his control over the last two starts, not giving up a free pass in 13 innings. His 1.59 ERA is good for fifth in the Midwest League, though he will likely get moved up soon enough that he won't remain on the leaderboard for long. … Infielder Gabriel Quintana, who has really been heating up at the plate, had to leave the game in the seventh inning. The 20-year-old has hit .440 over his last seven games, including a double among two more hits Friday. However, after swiping second base and advancing to third on a wild throw, he had to give way to Diego Goris. We'll work on getting you an update on his status.
