Minor League Recap for June 10

Vince Belnome and Jedd Gyorko did their part to make Mountaineers everywhere proud, while the teenage outfielders in Fort Wayne try to keep up. But pitching throughout the system had trouble matching their performances.

Tucson fall to Las Vegas 10-1
Despite the presence of rehabbing Cameron Maybin in center and newly-promoted Craig Italiano in the bullpen, the Padres were knocked around heavily by the 51s. Get the full recap from John Conniff.

San Antonio falls to Frisco 5-4
Casey Kelly earned a quality start, giving up a pair of earned runs over six innings of work, but the RoughRiders gave the Missions a dose of their own medicine coming back for a walk-off victory .

Kelly locked up with fellow top prospect Robbie Erlin, but neither was at their best. As Anthony Rizzo enjoys his roster spot in the majors, Kelly is still trying to hit his full stride in the Texas League. The 21-year-old righty allowed seven hits including three for extra bases and hit a batter. Kelly recorded only two strikeouts, but for the first time since early May, he didn't surrender a walk.

Vince Belnome continued his recent power outburst, knocking his fourth homer of the series. Over his last 10 games, he sports a .479 on-base percentage and a ridiculous .976 slugging percentage, and he has now moved his season line to .307/.413/.559. Perhaps the Padres should watch for every middle infielder the University of West Virginia puts on the field?

Jaff Decker slugged a double for the third consecutive game. After a stretch of ten games without an extra-base hit, Jaff is starting to make better contact, but still stuck out six times in the series.

Elsinore defeated by High Desert 10-7
The Storm held the lead twice on Friday, but surrendered it quickly both times and dropped the second of their four-game set in Adelanto.

Newly-named All Star Jedd Gyorko collected three hits, including a double, in five at-bats and managed to steal his 11th base of the year. Enjoying the visit through the "hitting on the moon" portion of the Cal League, Gyorko sports a 1.050 slugging percentage on the current road trip.

The experiment of moving Robert Lara to the mound continues to hit challenges. Entering a tied game in the eighth inning, the former catcher from Florida surrendered a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases, then was tagged for a grand slam that sealed the game. In his last four appearances, the 24-year-old has been tagged for 12 earned runs in just 4.1 innings.

Fort Wayne defeats Wisconsin 11-5
The TinCaps used a balanced attack to down the Timber Rattlers and snap a three-game losing streak.

Fort Wayne's dynamic teenage outfielders Rymer Liriano and Luis Domoromo each went 3-for-6 as they both moved their averages back over .300 for the year. Liriano was also 3-for-4 four on the bases, including two successful attempts at third base. Domoromo slugged his fourth homer of the season.

Starter Adys Portillo made it through his first three innings of work giving up only a pair of hits and striking out five. However, he opened the fourth surrendering a double, single and pair of walks before getting pulled. Noah Mull allowed only one of the three inherited runners to score to minimize the damage.
