Minor League Recap, April 15th

38 baserunners (in 8 innings) for the Missions, Galvez gives and takes in Elsinore, the home debut for the Tuscon Padres, and a rain out in the MWL

Bullpen cant hold the lead as Tuscon falls 6-7

Opening night in Tuscon! Tuscon ace and #2 Padre prospect, Simon Castro on the mound looking to rebound in his 2nd performance. After a tough start Castro settled down and pitched pretty well. The offense, mean while, was led by a strong performance by Cunningham and Rizzo. In the end the tandem of Burke, Flores, and Perdomo surrendered 4 runs in the final 3 innings, and the Padres dropped the home opener 6-7

Castro was hit hard early, giving up a 2 run HR in the 2nd and another solo shot in the 5th. Total, Castro went 6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. He threw only 86 pitches, but had some issues with finding the strike zone. Castro's ERA is still incredibly high at 9.90, but atleast he has his first AAA quality start under his belt and can hopefully build off of it.

Anthony Rizzo continued to impress. Rizzo went 3-4, 2B, HR (3), 2 RS, 2 RBI, BB, and a SB (2). Rizzo is currently batting ,378, and has had a multihit game in 6 of the 8 games so far this season. Aaron Cunningham, also had a strong day, coming only a HR shy of the cycle.

AA San Antonio is still running around the bases after winning 26-5

The Missions managed to score only 1 run in the first 7 innings at home this year (yesterday), finally in the 8th the broke through and won yesterdays game. Well, despite the fact that we all know and expect to see low scores at any and all homegames, this was not one of those days. Whatever magic the Missions use for the 6 run 8th yesterday translated to an insane 26 runs on 26 hits with 12 walks. To show just how insane the game was for the Missions, Kyle Phillips reached base fewer times than ANYONE in the lineup.... he went 3-6, HR (1), 2 RS, 4 RBI. Everyone else reached base 4 or more times! Missions win 26-5.

Jorge Reyes got the start, but honestly a trained monkey could have won the game. In all honestly Reyes actually did remarkable considering the wind was blowing out. He pitched a solid 5 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. Not great, but its hard to really do your best when you are up 11-1 after 2 innings. Josh Spence threw a nice 1,2,3 inning with 2 K.

Offensively well the Missions belted 7 HR(!) including 2 grand slams (Robertson and Tekotte). It is hard to single out any 1 or 2 hitters as being exceptional as they all did fantastic. The brothers Decker (no relation) went a combined 7-12, 2B, 4 HR, 7 RS, 10 RBI, and 2 BB. James Darnell went 4-5, 5 RS, 2 2B, RBI, 2 BB. Finally rehabbing Kyle Blanks (as the DH) went 3-6, 2B, 4 RS, BB, K in his 2nd game for the Missions.

High A Lake Elsinore lost a pitchers duel 1-2

We go from 1 end of the spectrum to the other. In Lake Elsinore the 2 teams combined for 3 runs on 7 hits (Missions had more than that in the 1st inning). Michael Watt got the start and was fantastic going 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K. McBryde then pitched 2 perfect innings (3 K), to set up Zach Herr. Unfortunately as Galvez giveth he also taketh away. Johnathan Galvez who scored the first run of the game with a leadoff 2B, threw away a grounder in the 8th with a runner on 2nd and 1 out. The runner at 1st was safe and the runner on 2nd scored on the error. Storm fall 1-2

Low A Fort Wayne was rained out.

They will play a double header tomorrow starting at 2 pm (PST). There is a chance (40%) that Everett Williams will be back to play at some capacity tomorrow. Tate on the other hand, is on the 7 day DL and is probably another week from returning.
