Edgar Gonzalez signed with the San Diego Padres as a minor league free agent on November 20, 2007.
Gonzalez played in 126 games for Triple-A Memphis (Cardinals) last season, primarily at second base (94 games). He hit .308 (142-for-461) with 34 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 53 RBI, 64 runs scored and 50 walks. Gonzalez hit at a .364 clip (80-for-226) on the road, with seven of his eight home runs coming away from home.
The San Diego native and older brother of Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez attended San Diego State University. Over parts of eight minor league seasons with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2000-03), Texas Rangers (2004), Washington Nationals (2005), Florida Marlins (2006) and St. Louis Cardinals (2007), Gonzalez has a career .297 average (876-for-2952) with 204 doubles, 29 triples, 60 home runs, 407 RBI, 422 runs scored and 360 walks in 855 games.
