Rayner Contreras began the year with the Fort Wayne Wizards where he hit .105 with four hits in 38 at bats over 12 games before being sent down to extended spring training on June 10.

Contreras then went on to lead the Arizona Rookie League in RBI's with 52 over 44 games. He hit .316 witht he AZL Padres, going 54-for-171 with nine doubles, three triples, two homers and 36 runs scored. He drew 20 walks, struck out 34 times and was 4-for-6 in stolen base attempts. Contreras hit .427 with runners in scoring position.

Contreras went 2-for-5 in the Championship game for the AZL Padres.

Rayner Contreras was signed as a free agent on January 2, 2004. He hit .267 with 41 RBI's over 81 games in the Dominican Summer League in 2004 and 2005.
