Randy Smith on the 2014 AZL Padres

We caught up with Randy Smith, the Padres’ Director of Player Development from his headquarters in Peoria, Arizona for the first segment of our six part interview on the top prospects in the system.

2014 MadFriars’ AZL Pitcher of the Year

Summary: One of the reasons that the AZL Padres had the worst record in the league was a lack of pitching as they finished with a 4.45 overall ERA. However, there were some promising picks that went to small colleges that could provide valuable arms, particularly in regards to left-handed pitching, coming out of the pen down the road.

2014 MadFriars’ AZL Player of the Year

Summary : This wasn’t the same type of team that we saw last year, where the AZL Padres lost in the semi-finals. This year’s edition finished with the worst overall record in the league at 20-36 but still there were some good players, particularly 2014 second round draft pick CF Michael Gettys.

MadFriars' Interview: Elliot Morris

LAKE ELSINORE - In last year’s off-season one of the trades the Padres made was sending super utility infielder Logan Forsythe and a slew of prospects to the Tampa Bay Rays for lefty Alex Torres and an oft injured minor league starter named Jesse Hahn.

MadFriars' Interview: Colin Rea

LAKE ELSINORE - RHP Colin Rea has always been someone the Padres believed has a lot of talent. At six-foot-five, 220 lbs. with a solid two-seam fastball that arrives in the low 90s to go along with a good cutter, the organization had always assumed Rea was capable of much more than his numbers indicated.
