Randy Smith on the 2014 San Antonio Missions

We caught up with Randy Smith, the Padres’ Director of Player Development from his headquarters in Peoria, Arizona for our fifth segment of our six part interview series on the top prospects in the system.

James Needy

2014 MadFriars' TL Pitcher of the Year

Summary: As noted yesterday, the Missions’ pitching staff suffered from a serious lack of run support. At one point during the year San Antonio went 40 innings without scoring a run but the pitching staff hung in there with an overall ERA of 3.36.

Cory Spangenberg

2014 MadFriars' TL Player of the Year

Summary: The Missions missed the playoffs after winning it all last year with a 68-72 record. As with their parent club, San Antonio was dominated by some very good pitching and bats that were largely silent.

Zach Eflin

Randy Smith on the 2014 Lake Elsinore Storm

We caught up with Randy Smith, the Padres’ Director of Player Development from his headquarters in Peoria, Arizona for our fourth segment of our six part interview on the top prospects in the system.

Colin Rea

2014 MadFriars'Cal League Pitcher of the Year

Summary: As we mentioned yesterday, the Storm finished with the best record in the system before being eliminated in the first round of the Cal League playoffs. What stood out for the Storm this year was the sheer amount of pitching prospects that passed through the Diamond that have a legitimate chance at the big leagues.

Hunter Renfroe

2014 MadFriars' Cal League Player of the Year

Summary: The Storm were the most successful team in the system with a 75-65 record before being swept in the opening round of the Cal League playoffs. The unusual aspect of this year’s squad was how much they were dominated by quality pitching prospects in what is easily the Padres’ organizations most hitter friendly league.

Randy Smith on the 2014 Fort Wayne TinCaps

We caught up with Randy Smith, the Padres’ Director of Player Development from his headquarters in Peoria, Arizona for our third segment of our six part interview series on the top prospects in the system.

MadFriars’ Announcer Series: Mike Maahs

In one capacity or another, Mike Maahs has been broadcasting baseball in Fort Wayne for the past eleven seasons whether they were named the Wizards or the TinCaps and either as an affiliate of the Minnesota Twins or San Diego Padres.

On the Beat: Fort Wayne

Some of the best sources for finding out about what is really going on at one of the affiliates is talking to the team’s beat writer, who is going to be possibly the only person that sees a significant amount of games and is not affiliated with either the big club or the affiliate.

Kyle Lloyd

2014 MadFriars' MWL Pitcher of the Year

Summary: The 2013 TinCaps were defined from the outset by the quartet of first-round draftees in their starting rotation. The club’s roster featured six teenagers at the start of the year, and their youth showed at times as they struggled for consistency during the year.

Jake Bauers

2014 MadFriars' MWL Player of the Year

Summary: The TinCaps were the youngest, and one of the more talented teams in the Midwest League. This meant they were capable of great highs, their drive to make their sixth straight playoff appearance and lows, a 13 game losing streak and leading the minors in errors.

Randy Smith on the 2014 Eugene Emeralds

We caught up with Randy Smith, the Padres’ Director of Player Development from his headquarters in Peoria, Arizona for our second segment of our six part interview series on the top prospects in the system.
