Jeremy Hefner picked up his fourth win, giving up one run on five hits and a pair of walks across six frames, striking out a half-dozen in a 105-pitch effort. The right-hander has given up two runs or less in four of his last five and nine of 12 overall. The workhorse has allowed just two runs in the fifth inning and beyond this year. He has given up just nine hits in 51 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Matt Clark reached base three times out of the cleanup spot, hitting a three-run homer in the fifth inning – his 10th – and adding a walk and a single. The first baseman has collected 23 RBI over his last 22 games with nine homers coming over that span. Five of his homers have come with runners on base where he is hitting .278.
Sawyer Carroll notched a single, walk, double, run scored and two RBI – both coming with two outs and giving him 30 for the campaign. The outfielder is 14-for-37, a .378 average, over his last 10 games with four doubles and two homers. Carroll, a left-handed hitter, is batting .327 off righties this season but just .144 off southpaws.
Lake Elsinore (40-20) lost 4-2 to Inland Empire (Dodgers)
Steve Garrison was on the hook for three runs on seven hits and an intentional walk across six innings, striking out a pair and notching 12 ground ball outs. The left-hander has given up three runs in each of his first two starts since coming off the injury shelf.
Zach Herr worked a scoreless inning, yielding one hit while striking out two. He also hit a batter and tossed a wild pitch. Herr has worked 12 straight scoreless appearances. The southpaw has given up six hits over his last 16 scoreless innings. Herr has allowed three hits in 23 at-bats to the leadoff batter of the inning.
Cole Figueroa extended his on base streak to 41 games and his hitting streak to 14.
Fort Wayne (30-30) won 4-2 over Kane County (A’s)
Edinson Rincon came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning with the TinCaps down by a run. He launched a grand slam over the left field wall – his third homer of the year. The third baseman went 2-for-4 in a game that saw the club manager four hits but did commit his 21st error. Rincon is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak, seeing four multi-hit games across that span. He has committed three errors in his last four contests.
Michael Watt earned a no-decision, giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk. He struck out five and notched seven ground ball outs, including a double play grounder. The left-hander has allowed one run or less in three of his last four starts. He has given up four hits or less four times. He has given up just one first inning run this season through 11 starts.
Danny Payne was ejected in the eighth inning.
