Padres Prospect Report: July 24, 2009

Cesar Carrillo has another solid outing but the bullpen blows it. James Darnell gives five and takes four back. Jaff Decker and Stiven Osuna combine to power the TinCaps. Jon Berger turns in another solid performance.

Portland (44-55) vs. Salt Lake (Angels) postponed due to a flu outbreak

The PCL announced Friday afternoon: "The Portland Beavers in a precautionary move due to an Influenza-A virus affecting seven players on their club have requested postponement of tonight's scheduled game against the Bees in Salt Lake City." No member of the team has been hospitalized. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday to makeup the game.

San Antonio (13-15, 52-45) lost 4-3 to Midland (A's) in 12 innings

Cesar Carrillo allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five across seven innings. He did surrender three extra base hits, including a homer, in a 97-pitch outing that resulted in a no-decision. Carrillo has won six straight starts coming into the game and has allowed two runs or less in four straight. His five strikeouts matched a season high while he added his 19th double play grounder of the year.

Evan Scribner came on in the ninth nursing a one-run lead that he would not hold, suffering the blown save. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk while fanning two – his fifth blown save in 22 chances. The right-hander has allowed eight runs on 13 hits and five walks over his last 10.2 innings after allowing nine runs total over his first 35.2 frames. His ERA has spiked from 2.02 to 2.72 on the season.

Scott Rice took the loss, giving up a run on a hit and two walks while also plunking a batter across two-thirds of an inning in the top of the 12th. The left-hander has allowed runs in 17 of his 18 appearances on the season but came into the game having given up runs in two of his previous 11. Rice has walked eight batters over his last six outings, issuing a free pass in five of the six.

Lake Elsinore (13-16, 52-47) lost 10-7 to Lancaster (Astros)

James Darnell's seventh error of the season led to five unearned runs crossing the dish. He got four back on his own, hitting a three-run homer in the seventh and adding an RBI single. The homer was his seventh with Lake Elsinore and 14th on the season. Darnell has registered an RBI in four straight and in six of his last eight, plating 13 over that span. He has reached base safely in 15 straight, recording seven multi-hit games over that span.

Andy Parrino came on to pitch in the eighth inning – the second time this season he has been asked to take the hill with both coming against the same Lancaster squad. He allowed four runs on four hits and a walk in his first appearance. This time out, the infielder gave up a hit and two walks before registering a strikeout with the bases loaded. Parrino went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts at the dish, giving him 61 Ks in 221 at-bats.

Fort Wayne (23-4, 68-29) won 4-2 over Kane County (A's)

Jaff Decker his his team leading 12th homer of the season, sending a solo shot into the bleachers with two outs in the third. Nine of his bombs have come with the bases empty. The outfielder also scored a pair of runs. He has smacked three homers in his last eight games. Decker is hitting .321 with the bases empty this season and .219 with runners in scoring position.

Stiven Osuna forged ahead to 8-6 on the season, allowing one unearned run on three hits and three walks while striking out six in 5.2 innings. The right-hander also hit a batter and tossed a wild pitch while picking off a runner at first. Osuna has won each of his last six starts. He has allowed two runs or less in each and given up one run or less five times. Over a 32.1 inning span, Osuna has given up three earned runs, lowering his season ERA from 5.80 to 3.84.

Rob Musgrave earned his fifth hold of the season, working scoreless ball over an inning and one-third. He walked one and struck out three while stranding an inherited runner. It was the first time this season he has entered the game with a runner on base. Musgrave has posted a 4.91 ERA across 10 relief appearances after notching a 6.57 ERA in nine starts.

Eugene (16-18) won 5-1 over Boise (Cubs)

The Emeralds drew more walks in the opening frame than they had hits for the entire game. Five free passes were worked in the first inning before Jason Codiroli notched a double that scored a run and capped the five-run frame. It was just his second double of the season, giving him six extra base hits in 24 games. Codiroli has reached base safely in 12 of his last 13 games with five RBI over his last four. He is hitting .364 with runners in scoring position.

Jon Berger worked six innings, giving up one run on three hits, a walk and a hit batsman while fanning seven. The right-hander has given up two runs across 14 innings in the Northwest League. It is the sixth time in seven starts across two leagues that he has allowed two runs or less. He has also given up three hits or less while working at least six innings three times.

David Erickson got out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the eighth inning by striking out the final two batters of the frame. The right-hander would retire all five batters he faced to pick up his sixth save of the season in seven attempts. Erickson has stranded all seven runners he has inherited. He has earned three saves that have spanned more than one inning and is holding the opposition to a .154 average.
