SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres announced today that the club has agreed to terms with 22 players selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, including infielder Nate Freiman (8th round, 234th overall) and right-handed pitcher Chris Fetter (9th, 264th).

The 6-foot-8 Nate Freiman led Duke University in batting average (.352), home runs (20) and RBI (62) for the third straight year, earning second team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors. He broke the Blue Devils' all-time home run record as a senior and became only the second player in school history to hit 20 home runs in a season.

Also at 6-foot-8, Chris Fetter was a second-team All-Big Ten selection for the University of Michigan. He was 7-3 with a 3.26 ERA this season, finishing his Wolverine career third on the school’s all-time wins list.

The Padres also agreed to terms with catcher Griffin Benedict (16th, 474th), infielder Cody Decker (22, 654th), left-handed pitcher Jeff Ibarra (23rd, 684th), right-handed pitcher Jon Berger (33rd, 984th), outfielder Kyle Loretelli (38th, 1,134th) and infielder Ryan Skube (44th, 1,134th).

Benedict is the son of former Major League catcher Bruce Benedict. Both Benedict and outfielder Ty Wright (25th, 744th) played at Georgia Southern University. The 6-foot-6 Ibarra is a San Marcos native who attended Palomar College.

Berger pitched at San Diego State University, where he was 4-5 with a 5.83 earned run average this season. He was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week on March 16. Decker was an All-Pac 10 infielder at UCLA who led the league in home runs in 2009. Loretelli was a two-time, first-team All-CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) selection at Cal State Stanislaus.

Skube is the son of Bob Skube, who serves as the hitting coach for the Padres’ Rookie-level Peoria (Ariz.) club. Bob is in his third season with San Diego’s minor league system and second as the Peoria Padres hitting coach.
