San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres announced today that they have acquired outfielder Tony Gwynn from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for outfielder Jody Gerut.

Anthony Gwynn, 26, has appeared in 38 games with Triple-A Nashville this season, hitting .308 (47-for-152) with eight doubles, one triple, one home run, nine RBI, 34 runs scored and 20 walks. He is posting a .395 on-base percentage and has stolen 15 bases in 16 attempts this year. Gwynn has hit safely in 32 of 38 games, reaching base in all but three contests. Playing primarily in center field (33 games), he has also appeared in left field (three games) and right field (two games) this season. Over parts of three seasons with the Brewers (2006-08), Gwynn hit .248 (60-for-242) with six doubles, three triples, 15 RBI, 23 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 130 Major League games.

The left-handed hitting outfielder was originally signed by Milwaukee as a second-round selection in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft out of San Diego State University. Gwynn graduated from Poway High School and is the third member of his family to play baseball at the Major League level, joining his father, Padres legend and current SDSU baseball coach Tony Gwynn, and uncle, former Padres player and current Padres professional scout Chris Gwynn.

Gwynn will be in uniform for tonight’s game against the Giants and will wear number 18.

Jody Gerut, 31, has hit .221 (25-for-113) with six doubles, four home runs, 14 RBI and 17 runs scored in 37 games for the Padres this year. He has appeared in 23 games in center field (21 starts) and five games in right field (3 starts).

Originally signed by the Padres as a minor league free agent on January 27, 2008, Gerut played in 100 games last season, seeing his first Big League action since 2005. Signed as a second-round selection by the Colorado Rockies in the 1998 First-Year Player Draft, he has hit .267 (420-for-1,572) with 96 doubles, 12 triples, 52 home runs, 197 RBI and 216 runs scored in 547 games over parts of five Major League seasons with the Cleveland Indians (2003-05), Chicago Cubs (2005), Pittsburgh Pirates (2005) and Padres (2008-09).
