Padres claim Wilson, make roster moves

The San Diego Padres claimed infielder Josh Wilson off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Additionally the club has recalled left-handed pitcher Joe Thatcher from Triple-A Portland, optioned right-handed pitcher Edwin Moreno to Portland, selected right-handed pitcher Greg Burke from Portland and requested waivers for the purpose of unconditional release on right-handed pitcher Duaner Sanchez.

The Padres have also placed infielder Luis Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 14) with a sprained left ankle and transferred right-handed pitcher Cha Seung Baek to the 60-day disabled list with a strained right forearm.

Josh Wilson, 28, has played in 11 games for the Diamondbacks this year, going 6-for-26 (.231) with one double, two RBI and one run scored. He also appeared in 15 games at Triple-A Reno, hitting .260 (13-for-50) with three doubles, one triple, one home run, 10 RBI and five runs scored.

Originally signed by the Florida Marlins as a third-round selection in the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Wilson has appeared in 127 Major League games over parts of four seasons with the Marlins (2005), Washington Nationals (2007), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2007) and Diamondbacks (2009). He is a career .233 hitter (74-for-318) with 17 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 26 RBI and 31 runs scored. In 989 career minor league games, he has hit .253 (937-for-3,710) with 209 doubles, 31 triples, 73 home runs, 483 RBI and 536 runs scored.

Joe Thatcher, 27, has made 14 appearances for Triple-A Portland in 2009, going 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA (2 ER/14.0 IP) and 17 strikeouts. He began the season by tossing 8.2 scoreless innings, has been scored upon in two of his outings overall and allowed earned runs just once. Entering his third season with San Diego, Thatcher has made 47 Major League appearances, going 2-6 with a 5.21 ERA (27 ER/46.2 IP) over parts of the 2007-08 seasons.

Greg Burke, 26, will make his Major League debut in his first appearance with the Padres. He is 3-0 with seven saves and a 2.25 ERA (4 ER/16.0 IP) in 13 relief outings for Triple-A Portland this year, limiting opponents to a .148 batting average (8-for-48). Over parts of four minor league seasons in the Padres organization (2006-09), Burke is 17-17 with 30 saves and a 3.78 ERA (141 ER/336.0 IP) in 159 games (27 starts).

Edwin Moreno, 28, made his Major League debut with the Padres this year, going 1-3 with four holds and a 4.67 ERA (9 ER/17.1 IP). Over parts of 10 minor league seasons in the Texas Rangers (1998-2004), Philadelphia Phillies (2005) and Padres organizations (2007-08), he has gone 42-48 with 35 saves and a 3.62 ERA (294 ER/730.0 IP) in 215 games (111 starts).

Duaner Sanchez, 29, made 11 relief appearances for the Padres, going 1-1 with five holds and a 6.75 ERA (7 ER/9.1 IP). Over parts of seven Major League seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2002), Pittsburgh Pirates (2002-2003), Los Angeles Dodgers (2004-2005), Mets (2006, 2008) and Padres (2009), Sanchez is 19-11 with eight saves and a 4.00 ERA (132 ER/297.0 IP) in 287 relief appearances.

Rodriguez, 28, injured his left ankle while rounding first after his seventh-inning single on Wednesday night in Chicago. He has played in 30 games for the Friars this season, making 24 starts at shortstop. Rodriguez is hitting .256 (20-for-78) on the year with four doubles, one home run, seven RBI and 11 runs scored. Over parts of five Major League seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2005-07) and Padres (2008-09), he has hit .257 (186-for-725) with 34 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 57 RBI and 83 runs scored.

Cha Seung Baek, 28, was originally placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 5 (retroactive to March 30) with a strained right forearm. He pitched in 22 games (20 starts) last year for the Padres, going 6-9 with a 4.62 ERA (57 ER/111.0 IP). Over parts of four Major League seasons with the Seattle Mariners (2004, 2006-08) and Padres (2008), Baek is 16-18 with a 4.83 ERA (150 ER/279.0 IP) in 59 games (44 starts). Recommended Stories
