San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres today announced they have traded infielder Chris Burke to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. In addition, the club has optioned left-handed pitcher Cesar Ramos to Triple-A Portland and announced right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova has cleared outright waivers and was tendered back to the New York Yankees.

Chris Burke, 29, appeared in 15 games this Spring for the Padres, making four starts at second base and three starts at third base. He hit .281 (9-for-32) with one double, three RBI and six runs scored.

Originally selected by the Astros in the first round (10th overall) of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, Burke owns a career .241 average (286-for-1,185) with 66 doubles, six triples, 22 home runs, 106 RBI, 36 stolen bases and 168 runs scored in 445 games over parts of five Big League seasons with the Astros (2004-07) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2008).

Cesar Ramos, 24, has gone 2-2 with a 10.93 ERA (17 ER/14.0 IP) in seven Cactus League appearances (two starts). He was originally signed by the Padres as a supplemental-round selection (35th overall) in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.

Ivan Nova, 22, went 0-0 with an 8.31 ERA (8 ER/8.2 IP) in eight Cactus League relief outings for the Padres. He was the organization’s second-round selection in the Major League portion of the 2008 Rule 5 draft. Originally signed by New York as a non-drafted free agent in 2004, Nova has gone 17-22 with a 4.09 ERA (150 ER/330.1 IP) and 237 strikeouts in 68 games (57 starts) over parts of four minor league seasons in the Yankees organization (2005-08).

With today’s moves, the Padres now have 37 players in Big League camp, including 24 off the 40-man roster and 13 non-roster invitees. The Padres 40-man roster is now at 38.
