Padres acquire De La Cruz from Marlins

Eulogio De La Cruz

The San Diego Padres announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Eulogio "Frankie" De La Cruz (pronounced ay-oo-low-HEE-yo) from the Florida Marlins in exchange for a player to be named later.

Eulogio De La Cruz, 25, spent the majority of the 2008 season at Triple-A Albuquerque, going 13-8 with a 4.34 ERA (71 ER/147.1 IP) and 118 strikeouts in 25 starts. The right-hander was called up by the Marlins on May 25 and made three stints with the Major League club last season. De La Cruz did not factor in a decision and posted an 18.00 ERA (18 ER/9.0 IP) in six appearances (one start).

Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Detroit Tigers on September 6, 2001, De La Cruz has no decisions and a 13.21 ERA (23 ER/15.2 IP) with nine strikeouts in 12 games (one start) over parts of two Major League seasons with the Tigers (2007) and Marlins (2008). De La Cruz, 25, was acquired by the Marlins in an eight-player trade with the Tigers on Dec. 5, 2007. He will join the Padres in Big League camp on Thursday.

With today's move, the Padres now have 41 players in Big League camp, including 26 off the 40-man roster and 15 non-roster invitees. The Padres 40-man roster is now at 40.
