Padres select Cabrera, Nova in Rule 5 Draft
Padres prospect

Posted Dec 11, 2008

The San Diego Padres selected Everth Cabrera from the Colorado Rockies organization with the third overall pick in Thursday's Rule 5 Draft. They added Ivan Nova in the second round - a right-hander out of the New York Yankees system. San Diego lost two players in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft, outfielder Javis Diaz and right-hander John Madden.

Everth Cabrera, an infielder who has spent most of his time at second base, played in 121 games for Asheville of the Low-A South Atlantic League in 2008.

The Nicaraguan batted .284 with 25 doubles, six triples, six homers, 38 RBIs and 80 runs scored.

Looking to add speed to their roster, Cabrera has that. The switch-hitter swiped 73 bases in 89 attempts this past season - far eclipsing the tally of any player in the Padres system - to lead the Sally League.

Ivan Nova was selected from the Florida State League where he was 8-13 with a 4.36 ERA across 26 games, including 24 starts for the Tampa Yankees. In 148.2 innings he allowed 168 hits, walked 46 and struck out 109. He also induced 23 double play grounders.

Nova has a three-pitch repertoire that includes a fastball, changeup and curveball. The right-hander has seen his fastball average in the mid-to-upper-80s when he first signed go to comfortably sitting in the 91-94 mph range a year ago. His changeup and curveball are both plus pitches that have seen some inconsistencies.

The Padres also lost outfielder Javis Diaz and right-hander John Madden in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft.

Diaz struggled trying to put more thump into the ball over the past year. The left-handed hitter hit .253 with the Lake Elsinore Storm and struck out 86 times while notching 18 extra base hits. Blessed with above-average speed, he stole 28 bases in 35 attempts for the Storm.

Madden, a sidearmer, went 2-3 with a 3.88 ERA across 52 games for the Storm. Armed with a plus slider, his velocity dipped two seasons ago and has not been the same since. He has terrific movement on his pitches and induces a lot of ground ball outs.
