San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres today announced that the club has exercised the 2009 contractual option for outfielder Brian Giles.

Brian Giles, 37, batted .306 (171-for-559) with 40 doubles, four triples, 12 home runs, 63 RBI, 87 walks and 81 runs scored in 147 games for the Padres in 2008. He led the team in batting average, doubles and walks, while ranking among National League leaders in batting average (8th), walks (T-10th), on-base percentage (6th, .398) and four-hit games (1st, 6).

Over parts of six seasons with the Padres (2003-08), Giles owns a .285 batting average (829-for-2904) with 179 doubles, 24 triples, 81 home runs, 392 RBI, 483 walks and 452 runs scored. He ranks among Padres all-time leaders in hits (6th), walks (2nd), doubles (T-3rd), RBI (9th) and runs scored (4th).

Over parts of 14 Major League seasons with the Cleveland Indians (1995-98), Pittsburgh Pirates (1999-2003) and Padres, Giles has a career batting average of .294 (1854-for-6302) with 401 doubles, 54 triples, 285 home runs, 1,055 RBI, 1,103 runs scored and 108 stolen bases in 1,786 games. At the end of the 2008 season, he finished as one of nine active players with 1,000 runs, 1,800 hits, 250 home runs, 1,000 RBI and 1,100 walks.
