Padres waive Chip Ambres

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres today announced that outfielder Chip Ambres has elected free agency after clearing outright waivers.

Chip Ambres, 28, appeared in 24 games for the Padres in 2008, going 8-for-41 (.195) with a double and three runs scored. He spent the majority of the season at Triple-A Portland, hitting .279 (115-for-412) with 27 doubles, three triples, 22 home runs, 77 RBI and 82 runs scored in 112 games. Ambres has appeared in 80 career Major League games over parts of three seasons with the Kansas City Royals (2005), New York Mets (2007) and Padres, going 44-for-189 (.233) with nine doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI and 28 runs scored.

Originally signed by the Florida Marlins as a first-round selection (27th overall) in the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Ambres has hit .259 (930-for-3,587) with 212 doubles, 49 triples, 113 home runs, 466 RBI and 650 runs scored in 1,004 games over parts of 10 minor league seasons in the Marlins (1999-2004), Boston Red Sox (2005), Royals (2006), Mets (2007) and Padres (2008) organizations.

The Padres 40-man roster is now at 32.
