Lake Elsinore lost 10-8 to Lancaster (Lancaster won the best-of-five series, 3-2)
Jeremy Hefner was on the hook for eight runs over three innings but just one of those was earned. A James Darnell error in the second led to one of those runs and Darnell’s second error of the game and third in this playoff series helped lead to six more in the following frame. Cedric Hunter also committed a miscue during that six-run third frame. Hefner had thrown three scoreless innings in his only other playoff appearance.
Wynn Pelzer, continuing the theme of those coming from Fort Wayne, supplanted Hefner to open the fourth. Pelzer kept the Storm in the game, providing 3.2 scoreless frames, giving up one hit while striking out two. Pelzer had not surrendered a hit over his first 3.2 innings of work during the playoffs, striking out two.
Sam Carter gave Lake Elsinore their second lead of the game in the top of the eighth. With two on and two out, the outfielder smashed a double to left that scored both runners, putting the Storm up 9-8. Carter went 2-for-5 for the game with four of his eight hits during the playoff run going for extra bases.
Brandon Gomes came on in the seventh and stranded an inherited runner by inducing a line out to second. A one out single and two out passed ball put a runner on third. The subsequent single tied the game at 9-9 and the runner advanced to second on an error. R.J. Rodriguez came on to get the final out and intentionally walked the first batter before giving up two infield singles that pushed the go-ahead and eventual winning run across.
