Charles Haeger, 24, went 10-13 with a 4.45 ERA (88 ER/178.0 IP) in 28 games (25 starts) for Triple-A Charlotte this season. The knuckleballer recorded 117 strikeouts compared to 77 walks while holding opponents to a .251 average (167-for-666). Haeger tied for the International League lead with three complete games and led the league with 178.0 innings pitched. He was designated for assignment by Chicago on September 6.
Selected by the White Sox in the 25th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Haeger made his Major League debut with Chicago in 2006. Over parts of two Major League seasons (2006-07), he is 1-2 with one save and a 4.85 ERA (16 ER/29.2 IP) in 15 games (one start). Haeger is 46-56 with six saves and a 3.92 ERA (359 ER/823.2 IP), 570 strikeouts and 371 walks in 158 career minor league games (118 starts) in the White Sox system.
Haeger will join the Padres this Friday (September 12) when the team hosts the Giants at PETCO Park. San Diego’s 40-man roster is now at 40.
