Carlin has had two previous stints with the Padres, hitting .154 across 33 games. He had five extra base hits, six RBIs and 12 runs scored, drawing nine walks while striking out 32 times. Carlin threw out 7-of-32 base runners attempting to steal.
The backstop hit .261 across 31 games with the Beavers, drawing 19 walks and posting a .396 on-base percentage.
