Padres place Greene on DL; Iguchi reinstated

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Padres today placed shortstop Khalil Greene on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 31) with a fracture of the fifth metacarpal on his left hand and reinstated infielder Tadahito Iguchi from the 15-day disabled list. The club also announced that outfielder Chip Ambres has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Portland.

Khalil Greene, 28, has played 105 games at shortstop for the Padres this season, including 103 starts, committing eight errors in 443 total chances. He ranks second in the Major Leagues with 934.0 innings played at the position and second among National League shortstops with a .982 fielding percentage. Greene is hitting .213 (83-for-389) with 15 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 35 RBI, 30 runs scored, 22 walks and five stolen bases this season.

Originally selected by San Diego in the first round (13th overall) of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, Greene has hit .248 (594-for-2397) with 150 doubles, 14 triples, 84 home runs, 328 RBI and 301 runs scored over parts of six Major League seasons (2003-08) with San Diego.

Tadahito Iguchi, 33, has been on the disabled list since June 6 with a separated right shoulder. He sustained the injury in the Padres game against the Mets on June 5 when he fell onto his right shoulder while running the bases. In 59 games with San Diego this season he has hit .259 (62-for-239) with 12 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 20 RBI and 25 runs scored. Iguchi has made 57 appearances at second base, including 56 starts, and has not committed an error in 279 total chances. Additionally, he has not committed an error in his last 124 games overall dating back to June 15, 2007 while with the White Sox.

Signed by the Padres as a free agent on December 14, 2007, Iguchi is a career .273 hitter (484-for-1770) with 88 doubles, 11 triples, 44 home runs, 201 RBI and 263 runs scored in 467 games over parts of four Major League seasons with the White Sox (2005-07), Philadelphia Phillies (2007) and Padres (2008).

Chip Ambres, 28, was designated for assignment on Tuesday (July 29). In eight games for the Padres this season, including four starts in right field, he went 2-for-17 (.118). His contract was purchased from Triple-A Portland on July 8 after hitting .289 (92-for-318) with 24 doubles, five triples, 16 home runs, 62 RBI and 70 runs scored in 85 games with the Beavers. Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Kansas City Royals (2005), New York Mets (2007) and Padres (2008), Ambres has hit .230 (38-for-165) with eight doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI and 25 runs scored in 64 games.
