Padres trade Clark for Scribner

The San Diego Padres today acquired right-handed pitcher Evan Scribner from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for infielder Tony Clark.

Evan Scribner, who turns 23 on Saturday, has made a combined 28 relief appearances between the Diamondbacks Single-A affiliates in South Bend and Visalia. He has combined to go 2-4 with nine saves and a 1.64 ERA (8 ER/44.0 IP). In his 44.0 innings of work, he has recorded 62 strikeouts and has converted all nine of his save opportunities. Originally signed by Arizona as a 28th-round selection in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Scribner has gone 3-5 with 11 saves and a 2.27 ERA (23 ER/91.1 IP) over parts of two minor league seasons in the Diamondbacks organization (2007-2008). He has 123 strikeouts compared to 24 walks. Scribner will be assigned to Single-A Lake Elsinore.

Tony Clark, 36, hit .239 (21-for-88) with three doubles, one home run, 11 RBI and five runs scored in 70 games for the Padres this season. He hit .260 (13-for-50) as a pinch-hitter, making one start at first base and nine as designated hitter. Over parts of 14 Major League seasons with the Detroit Tigers (1995-2001), Boston Red Sox (2002), New York Mets (2003), New York Yankees (2004), Diamondbacks (2005-07) and Padres (2008), Clark is a career .264 hitter (1163-for-4403) with 227 doubles, 11 triples, 245 home runs, 800 RBI and 615 runs scored.
