San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres today purchased the contract of outfielder Chip Ambres from Triple-A Portland and also recalled infielder Brian Myrow and left-handed pitcher Joe Thatcher from the Beavers.

The Padres have outrighted outfielder Paul McAnulty and right-handed pitcher Carlos Guevara to Portland and placed right-handed pitcher Brett Tomko on the 15-day disabled list due to a right elbow strain (retroactive to July 1).

Chip Ambres, 28, has batted .289 (92-for-318) with 24 doubles, five triples, 16 home runs, 62 RBI, 70 runs and 41 walks in 85 games with Portland this season. In 56 Major League games with Kansas City (2005) and the New York Mets (2007), he has a career .243 batting average (36-for-148) with eight doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI, 25 runs scored and 16 walks. Ambres was a non-roster invitee to Spring Training after signing with the Padres as a minor league free agent on November 20, 2007.

In 87 games with Portland in 2008, the 31-year-old Brian Myrow has batted .324 (97-for-299) with 21 doubles, one triple, 10 homers, 53 RBI, 56 runs scored and 71 walks. He has a career Major League average of .167 (5-for-30) with two doubles and one RBI in 31 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2005) and Padres (2007). He played in 12 games with San Diego last season, collecting a double and one RBI in 10 at-bats.

Joe Thatcher, 26, will be in his fourth stint with the Padres in 2008. He is 0-4 with a 7.40 ERA (17 ER/20.2 IP) in 18 appearances. He is 4-0 with three saves and a 1.21 ERA (3 ER/22.1 IP) in 19 relief appearances with Portland this year. Thatcher made his Major League debut with the Padres in 2007 and is 2-6 with a 4.32 ERA (20 ER/41.2 IP) with 16 walks and 30 strikeouts in 40 career relief outings.

McAnulty, 27, has hit .207 (28-for-135) with seven doubles, one triple, three home runs, 13 RBI, nine runs scored and 26 walks in 66 games for the Padres this year. In 124 Major League games with San Diego (2005-2008), McAnulty has batted .208 (44-for-212) with nine doubles, one triple, five home runs, 21 RBI, 21 runs scored and 34 walks.

Guevara, 26, was acquired by San Diego from Florida on December 6, 2007 after the Marlins selected him from Cincinnati in the Rule 5 Draft. He has cleared waivers and the Padres have acquired him from the Reds in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. San Diego has subsequently outrighted Guevara to Triple-A Portland. In 10 relief appearances with the Padres this season, he is 1-0 with a 5.84 ERA (8 ER/12.1 IP) with nine walks and 11 strikeouts after making his Major League debut on June 2 vs. the Cubs. He began the season on the disabled list due to a strained right groin. Guevara made five rehab appearances at Portland before being activated by San Diego on May 31.

Tomko, 35, has made two relief appearances for the Padres this year, allowing one hit and one run in 3.0 innings. He was 2-7 with a 6.97 ERA (47 ER/60.2 IP) in 16 games (10 starts) with the Kansas City Royals before he was designated for assignment on June 12. The Padres signed the Poway, Calif., native on June 27. Tomko previously pitched for the Padres in 2002 and part of the 2007 campaign. Originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 1995 Draft, Tomko is 95-99 with two saves and a 4.70 ERA (905 ER/1734.2 IP) in 364 career games (260 starts) over parts of 12 seasons with the Reds (1997-99), Seattle Mariners (2000-01), Padres (2002, 2007, 2008), St. Louis Cardinals (2003), San Francisco Giants (2004-05), Los Angeles Dodgers (2006-07) and Royals (2008).
