Iguchi to DL; Stansberry recalled

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres today placed infielder Tadahito Iguchi on the 15-day disabled list with a separated right shoulder and recalled infielder Craig Stansberry from Triple-A Portland.

Additionally, the club reinstated right-handed pitcher Clay Hensley from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Portland.

Tadahito Iguchi suffered the injury in last night’s game against the Mets when he fell onto his right shoulder while running the bases in the seventh inning. He is hitting .259 (62-for-239) with 12 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 20 RBI and 25 runs scored in 59 games with the Padres this year. Over parts of four Major League seasons with the Chicago White Sox (2005-07), Philadelphia Phillies (2007) and Padres (2008), Iguchi is a career .273 hitter (484-for-1,770) with 88 doubles, 11 triples, 44 home runs, 201 RBI and 263 runs scored in 467 games.

The 33-year-old is one of two everyday second basemen who have not committed an error this season with the other being Tampa Bay’s Akinori Iwamura. Iguchi has not committed an error in his last 124 games and 607 total chances dating back to his last error on June 12, 2007 while with the White Sox.

Craig Stansberry is hitting .232 (43-for-185) with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs 19 RBI and 28 runs scored in 51 games for Triple-A Portland this year. He has appeared in 29 games at shortstop and 19 games at third base. The 26-year-old made his Major League debut with the Padres on August 25, 2007, and finished 2-for-7 with one RBI and one run scored in 11 games with San Diego last season.

Over parts of six minor league seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates (2003-06) and Padres (2007-08) organizations, Stansberry is a career .265 hitter (577-for-2,180) with 123 doubles, 30 triples, 63 home runs, 323 RBI and 342 runs scored in 598 games.

Hensley, 28, was originally placed on the DL with a right shoulder strain on March 26 (retroactive to March 21). He has worked a combined 18.0 innings between Single-A Lake Elsinore and Portland, posting a 3.50 ERA (7 ER) in 11 rehabilitation appearances (four starts). Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Padres (2005-07), Hensley has a career 14-16 record and 3.92 ERA (124 ER/284.2 IP) in 74 career appearances (39 starts).
