Ellis a winner; Breit returns to the mound

Jon Ellis moved to the top of the Texas League in its most important category. Cory Luebke gave up six extra base hits, Chris Shaver debuts. Kellen Kulbacki homers – again. Aaron Breit is back on the hill with a win in his pocket.

Jon Ellis moved into the Texas League lead with his seventh victory of the season, working two scoreless innings while yielding a pair of walks and hitting a batter. The right-hander has picked up the win in three straight appearances and four of his last five. Ellis has given up two runs over his last 18.2 innings. He has induced two of his four double play grounders over the last three games.

Stephen Faris received a no-decision, despite allowing a single run on five hits and a walk over five innings while striking out a half-dozen. The right-hander has given up one earned run or less in five of his 10 starts. Take away his nine-run outing and Faris has secured a 3.09 over his other nine outings. He has notched a double play grounder in four straight games, netting five rally killers over that span.

Greg Burke picked up his third save in as many chances, giving up a hit and striking out one. The right-hander has allowed one earned run over his last 26 innings of work, lowering his ERA from 2.33 to 1.19. Burke has surrendered runs in six of his 23 relief appearances. While the opposition has a .315 average against Burke with the bases empty, he has held opponents to a .158 mark with runners on base.

Lake Elsinore (29-30) lost 8-5 over Inland Empire (Dodgers)

Cory Luebke gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three across four innings, taking the loss and dropping to 2-3. Six of the hits went for extra bases and 28 of the 80 hits he has yielded this year across 53.1 innings have gone for extra bases. The opposition is hitting .348 off him and has scored 12 runs on 17 hits over his last six innings. Right-handers have hit .380 off the lefty.

Chris Shaver came in with two men on, stranding one of the two inherited runners. He worked a full inning but left with two men on in the following frame. Neither would score. Shaver stranded 10 of the 14 runners he inherited in Double-A this season, posting a 2-1 record and a 3.42 ERA. In Triple-A, Shaver stranded two inherited runners but posted a 9.00 ERA across three appearances.

Kellen Kulbacki was the only Storm player to notch a multi-hit game and hit his fourth homer of the year – a solo shot in the sixth. The outfielder has hit a homer in three straight games and four of the last five. Kulbacki also has an RBI in five of the last six, plating nine runs over that span. He is 9-for-24 over his last six games, upping his average from .179 to .238. He has scored a run in six of the last seven.

Fort Wayne (31-28) won 4-3 over Great Lakes (Dodgers)

Robert Perry had one hit in five at-bats but it was the one that counted. His two-run homer in the seventh put the Wizards ahead 4-3 – a lead they would not relinquish. Perry has collected a hit in each of his six games in the Midwest League, scoring a run in five of those six contests. While he is hitting .385 with the Wizards, he has a .206 average overall across two leagues.

Aaron Breit came off the disabled list and worked two innings, giving up a single hit while striking out two – picking up the win. The right-hander went 3-11 with a 6.73 ERA over 31 appearances, including 21 starts. In 108.1 innings, Breit allowed 139 hits and 47 walks while striking out 80. He posted a 3.81 ERA in August – his best month of the year.

Wynn Pelzer worked five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five. He surrendered two homers – accounting for all three runs. The right-hander had allowed just three homers in his previous 12 outings, spanning 43.2 innings. Pelzer had not allowed more than two runs in any outing since April 10 and has given up three or more runs three times.
