A two-out double by Drew Toussaint off Mike Ekstrom proved to be fruitful in the top of the second. After Adam Greenberg walked, Hainley Statia drove a ball over Alley’s head in left for a triple to put the Travelers ahead by one. A Michael Collins double – past a diving Alley down the right field line – followed to make it 3-1.
Toussaint led off the fourth with a triple into the right-centerfield gap. Statia’s one out single past a drawn in infield put the Travs up by three. Collins added his second double of the afternoon, sending Ekstrom from the game with five runs on the board.
Manny Ayala came on and retired the final two batters without allowing the run. Ayala would allow a run on a pair of walks and a single in the sixth.
“Ekstrom wasn’t very good,” San Antonio Missions manager Bill Masse said. “Not much more to say than that.”
Drew Macias one-out double just inside the left field line led to the first San Antonio run in the bottom of the first. After a wild pitch, Chad Huffman plated the centerfielder with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Missions put two men in runners in scoring position with nobody out in the seventh, seeing a pair of singles from Kyle Blanks and Mike Baxter. They would not score either runner, seeing a pop out, a strikeout and a fly out.
Two singles through the infield off Wilton Lopez led a rally in the eighth. A groundout produced one run and a bloop single scored a second. Corey Smith doubled in a third run, putting Arkansas up 9-1.
Drew Macias added an RBI groundout in the eighth after a Jonathan Schemmel double and Gabe Lopez single.
Arkansas starter Dan Denham worked eight innings, tossing 106 pitches while allowing two runs on five hits and three walks. He retired 10 men in a row at one point.
The Missions will head on the road after a day off on Tuesday.
“It can’t hurt,” Masse said of leaving Nelson Wolff behind.
Note: The Missions will play their annual golf tournament on Tuesday, raising money for inner city baseball and scholarships for local student athletes.
