Padres sign Tomko; Hensley recalled

San Diego, CA - The San Diego Padres today agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Brett Tomko and recalled right-handed pitcher Clay Hensley from Triple-A Portland. Additionally, catcher Pete Laforest was claimed off outright waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Brett Tomko appeared in 33 games (15 starts) for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, going 2-11 with a 5.80 ERA (67 ER/104.0 IP), 79 strikeouts and 42 walks. The 34-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on August 24. Originally signed as a second-round selection in the 1995 First-Year Player Draft by the Cincinnati Reds, Tomko joins the Padres for the second time, having made 32 starts for San Diego during the 2002 campaign. He posted a 10-10 record along with a 4.49 ERA (102 ER/204.1 IP) for the Friars that year.

Over parts of 11 Major League seasons with the Reds (1997-99), Seattle Mariners (2000-01), Padres (2002), St. Louis Cardinals (2003), San Francisco Giants (2004-05) and Dodgers (2006-07), Tomko is 91-91 with a 4.62 ERA (843 ER/1643.2 IP), 1,087 strikeouts and 535 walks in 339 games (246 starts).

The 28-year-old Clay Hensley was most recently optioned to Portland on August 26. In three stints with the Padres this season, he has posted an overall record of 2-3 with a 6.43 ERA (35 ER/49.0 IP) in 12 games (nine starts). Hensley went 2-7 with a 6.72 ERA (53 ER/71.0 IP), 50 strikeouts and 34 walks in 13 starts for Portland this year.

Acquired by the Padres from the San Francisco Giants on July 13, 2003, Hensley is 14-16 with a 3.84 ERA (121 ER/283.2 IP) in 73 career appearances with San Diego (39 starts).

The 29-year-old Laforest was designated for assignment on August 31. In 10 games over two stints with San Diego this season, he batted .360 (9-for-25) with a double, homer, three RBI and seven runs scored. Originally claimed off waivers by the Padres on December 2, 2005, Laforest has a .204 career batting average (28-for-137) with six doubles, two homers, 13 RBI, 12 runs scored and 12 walks over 54 Major League games with Tampa Bay (2003, 2005) and San Diego (2007).
