Hatcher optioned; Hensley recalled

San Diego, CA-- The worst kept secret came to fruition on Thursday when the San Diego Padres today recalled right-handed pitcher Clay Hensley from Triple-A Portland and optioned left-hander Joe Thatcher to Portland.

The 27-year-old Clay Hensley was recalled from Portland on July 25 and posted a 2.45 ERA (3 ER/11.0 IP) in four games (one start) after his recall. He started and did not factor in the decision in the Padres 3-2, 12-inning win over San Francisco August 4, yielding two runs over 4.2 innings. He was optioned to Portland the next day and made one start for the Beavers, getting a no-decision on August 10 at Salt Lake City when he allowed five hits and two runs over 6.0 innings.

Hensley began the season with San Diego and is 1-3 with a 6.18 ERA (27 ER/39.1 IP) in 10 games (seven starts) overall with the Padres in 2007. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 4 (retroactive to May 3) due to a right groin strain and optioned to Portland on June 1. He has posted an overall record of 2-6 with a 6.55 ERA (48 ER/66.0 IP) in 12 starts at Triple-A.

Acquired by the Padres from the Giants on July 13, 2003, Hensley is 13-16 with a 3.71 ERA (113 ER/274.0 IP) in 71 career appearances with San Diego (37 starts).

Joe Thatcher, 25, has had two stints with the Padres this season, pitching in five games and allowing three unearned runs in 5.0 innings with two walks and three strikeouts. He has pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in four games with Portland.

Thatcher was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers on July 25 along with right-handed pitcher Will Inman and left-hander Steve Garrison in exchange for right-hander Scott Linebrink. In 24 relief appearances this season with Triple-A Nashville, he went 2-1 with one save and a 2.08 ERA (5 ER/21.2 IP) with seven walks and 33 strikeouts.
