Portland, OR— Portland came out on the short end of a well fought pitchers duel against Nashville Thursday night in front of the second largest crowd of the season (12,812) at PGE Park. The game remained scoreless through eight innings until late inning heroics by Gabe Gross pushed Nashville ahead 1-0 for the win.

Matt Teague’s start for Portland Thursday night was a true gem. The left-handed rookie, fresh up from Class-A Eugene, allowed one hit over five innings of work and faced just one batter over the minimum. Teague’s start was his tenth professional appearance and his longest start. After being drafted in the eighth round of this year’s draft out of Carson-Newman College, Teague had compiled a 1-0 record and 3.30 ERA in nine outings with Eugene.

Unfortunately for the Beavers, Nashville starter R.A. Dickey also turned in a stellar performance. Dickey, a Tim Wakefield (harder/faster) style knuckleballer, held the Beavers to zero runs on five hits through seven innings. Coming into Thursday night’s game, he had posted a 4-1 record with a 2.04 ERA over his last eight starts.

Aaron Rakers came on to relieve Teague in the sixth inning. Rakers has not allowed a run in his last five appearances, and held Nashville scoreless through two solid innings of work.

Both lineups were offensively mute through eight innings, but the Sounds pulled ahead in the ninth 1-0. The Beavers brought in Scott Cassidy to try and preserve the scoreless tie. After getting one quick out, Gabe Gross blasted a solo home run over centerfield fence.

The slim lead was all the Nashville Sounds would need as Luther Hackman came on for the bottom of the ninth and shut down the Beavers final efforts.

Game Notes:

- The Beavers left nine men on base

- In the third inning, Dickey hit a line drive to right field and was thrown out at first base

- Nashville is 23-10 this season when facing left-handed starting pitchers
