San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres announced today that they have requested unconditional release waivers on infielder-outfielder Russell Branyan.

The move makes room on San Diego's 25-man roster for outfielder Scott Hairston, who reported to the club today prior to the Padres' game at Houston. He will wear uniform number 14. He was acquired from Arizona on Friday in exchange for right-handed pitcher Leo Rosales.

Russell Branyan, 31, batted .197 (24-for-122) with five doubles, one home run, 19 RBI, 16 runs scored and 21 walks in 67 games for San Diego this season. He made 30 starts, including 18 at third base, nine in left field and three as the designated hitter.

In 688 Major League games over parts of 10 seasons, Branyan has a career average of .229 (419-for-1827) with 88 doubles, seven triples, 118 home runs, 293 RBI, 253 runs and 255 walks.
