Padres recall Hensley; Sledge optioned

San Diego, CA -- The San Diego Padres today recalled right-handed pitcher Clay Hensley from Triple-A Portland and optioned outfielder Terrmel Sledge to that same Portland club.

Clay Hensley, 27, has posted a 6.90 ERA (46 ER/60.0 IP) in 11 starts with Portland this season. His last start came July 14 at Sacramento tossing 5.1 innings allowing six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out six. Hensley was 1-3 with a 7.62 ERA (24 ER/28.1 IP) in six starts with the Padres this season before being placed on the 15-day disabled list May 4 (retroactive to May 3) due to a right groin strain. He was reinstated and optioned to Triple-A Portland on June 1. Over parts of three seasons in 67 career appearances with San Diego (36 starts), Hensley is 13-16 with a 3.76 ERA (110 ER/263.0 IP).

Terrmel Sledge, 30, appeared in five games going 0-for-5 in pinch-hitting opportunities since being reinstated from the 15-day disabled list (strained right thumb) on July 18. In 62 games for the Padres this season, Sledge is hitting .216 (32-for-148) with six doubles, six homers, 16 RBI and 17 runs scored. He has made 38 starts this season, including 37 in left field and one in right.

Over parts of four Major League seasons with Montreal/Washington (2004-05) and San Diego (2006-07), Sledge has batted .251 (164-for-653) with 29 doubles, seven triples, 24 home runs, 93 RBI and 76 runs scored in 253 games.
