Justin Hampson, 27, was most recently optioned to Portland on July 7. Over two stints with San Diego this season, he is 2-2 with a 2.30 ERA (7 ER/27.1 IP) in 16 relief appearances. In 10 games with Portland this year, Hampson is 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA (5 ER/12.2 IP), limiting left-handed hitters to a .133 batting average (2-for-15).
Claimed off waivers by San Diego from Colorado on Oct. 11, 2006, Hampson is 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA (17 ER/39.1 IP) in 21 Major League games (one start) with Colorado (2006) and San Diego (2007).
The 26-year-old Royce Ring was recalled from Triple-A Portland on June 22 for his second stint with San Diego. In 15 relief appearances with the Padres overall this season, he is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA (6 ER/15.0 IP). Ring is 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA (4 ER/29.1 IP) and one save in 25 games with Portland in 2007.
A native of La Mesa, Calif., Ring has a career record of 1-2 with a 3.52 ERA (15 ER/38.1 IP) in 41 Major League games with the New York Mets (2005-2006) and Padres (2007). The Padres acquired Ring from the Mets on November 15, 2006 along with right-handed pitcher Heath Bell in exchange for outfielder Ben Johnson and right-hander Jon Adkins.
