Eugene, OR- The Emeralds bats went cold on a warm night at Civic Stadium. The Ems managed only five hits and lost 5-1 to the Boise Hawks. The Hawks picked up their first win of the season while the Ems saw their three-game win streak snapped and dropped to 6-3.

Boise opened the scoring in the first inning off of Eugene starter Jeremy McBryde. McBryde hit Boise leadoff man Jonathon Wyatt who then advanced to third via a fielder’s choice and a passed ball. Ty Wright drove in Wyatt with an RBI double that bounced off of third base and over the head of the Ems Brian Joynt.

The Hawks added a run in the second thanks to an infield hit by catcher Mario Mercedes and a broken bat looper by the nine hitter Drew Rundle. Boise took advantage of McBryde’s slow delivery out of the stretch as both Mercedes and Rundle swiped second during the inning.

The Ems mounted a few rallies throughout the course of the game, but could not get over the hump. They had second and third with two outs in the first, but could not push any runs across. Relief pitcher John Muller for the Hawks walked the bases loaded in the fourth, but he settled down and induced a groundout by Brian Lauderdale to retire the side.

Boise starter Zachary Ashwood pitched three scoreless innings and allowed only one hit. Harol Tolentino picked up the win for the Hawks, giving up one run on two hits while striking out five in three innings.

Boise did most of their damage in the fourth inning. After a leadoff groundout, Mercedes singled through the hole at short. Designated hitter Billy Mottram followed with a two-run home run to right field. A sacrifice fly by Marquez Smith in the fifth inning accounted for Boise’s fifth and final run of the night.

The Emeralds managed to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh off Tolentino. Lauderdale provided the lone bright spot for the Ems Wednesday night with his blast over the right field wall.

“I was looking fastball, middle in and he just gave it to me,” Lauderdale said. “We [the Emeralds] have a great hitting ball club, but tonight it didn‘t come together.”

The Emeralds used four pitchers in the game and McBryde took the loss to move his record on the year to 0-1. Boise got to McBryde for four runs on five hits. Yesid Salazar gave up one run on two hits in two innings of relief. Adam McDaniel threw a third of an inning while Jeremy Hefner threw the games final two innings without surrendering a run and allowing just one hit.

The Ems started a two-out rally in the ninth with a walk by Danny Payne and an infield hit by Parrino. Audy Santana, however, closed the door on the Ems by striking out Kellen Kulbacki to end the game.

Andrew Parrino had a solid night at the plate for the Emeralds going 3-for-5 with three singles. Parrino, Luis Martinez, and Lauderdale were the only other Ems to get hits off of the solid Boise pitching.

The Hawks were paced offensively by Mercedes who finished the night 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Mottram with his two RBIs.

Perhaps Lauderdale summed up the night from the Emeralds perspective by saying, “sometimes you just don’t have it and tonight was one of those nights.”

Notes: Danny Payne set a record, reaching base in 85 straight games – 77 in college and the first eight of professional ball. The record for consecutive games reaching base was 84, set by Ted Williams in 1949.
