How are you feeling right now after having been picked by the Padres and were you expecting to be drafted by San Diego?
Emmanuel Quiles: I was very surprised. I did not expect it.
How did you find out?
Emmanuel Quiles: They had to call me because I don’t have Internet.
Talk about your game a little bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Padres?
Emmanuel Quiles: All I know is I love to play. Everything (I do) is for baseball.
Any weaknesses in your game right now?
Emmanuel Quiles: I need to work more on my throw to second. Right now my time is 1.84-1.85 seconds.
Who would you compare your game to at the Major League level so Padres’ fans have an idea of what your game is like?
Emmanuel Quiles: I would compare myself with Ivan Rodriguez. I like how he plays and I compare myself with him. I have always looked up to him.
What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?
Emmanuel Quiles: My best moment in baseball has definitely been this year because I was never a catcher. I’ve always liked it and wanted to be a catcher, but I’ve only been a catcher for two years.
What other positions did you play?
Emmanuel Quiles: I used to play shortstop and I was also a pitcher. But I wasn’t tall enough for a pitcher. I just didn’t have the height and they just didn’t see me in that position.
Do you see yourself staying at the same position or do you think you’ll be moved to another position?
Emmanuel Quiles: I think this is my position. If they put me in another position I’ll play it. I’ll play anything.
How fast did you pitch?
Emmanuel Quiles: I was never checked by a radar gun.
Who was your favorite team growing up?
Emmanuel Quiles: Yankees.
What are your immediate plans now that you have been drafted by the Padres? Is it your intention to sign now and start your professional career immediately?
Emmanuel Quiles: I’m going to train first and do the job however it needs to be done. I signed (Thursday) and I’m leaving (Friday).
With you being so young, are your parents worried about you leaving home?
Emmanuel Quiles: No. It’s their dream too for me to do this.
When did you start playing baseball?
Emmanuel Quiles: I started playing baseball when I was three years old. I’ve always wanted to be a catcher but I never got put in that position. I always played wherever because I’m a good hitter and I have a good arm.
