Jake Peavy, whose 0.79 ERA led the Major Leagues in May, posted a 4-0 record during the month. Over 34.0 innings pitched, he allowed only three earned runs and no more than two earned runs in an outing. He recorded 39 strikeouts, including consecutive 10-strikeout performances on May 6th and May 11th. Jake Peavy is a one-time National League All-Star and was a member of Team USA during the inaugural World Baseball Classic. This is his second career National League Pitcher of the Month Award.
Other pitchers receiving votes were Padres’ teammates Chris Young (4-1, 1.13 ERA, 39 SO) and Trevor Hoffman (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 11 saves); Atlanta’s John Smoltz (4-1, 1.66 ERA, 35 SO); Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels (5-1, 4.14 ERA 49 KO); and Milwaukee’s Francisco Cordero, who posted a (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 9 saves).
Haren went 3-0 in six starts, with a 1.67 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 43.0 innings pitched. The 26-year-old right-hander struck out a season-high nine batters against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on May 4th. He won three consecutive games to finish the month and raised his win total to six on the year. Dan leads the American League with a minuscule 1.64 ERA this season. This is his first American League Pitcher of the Month Award.
Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona (4-0, 2.25 ERA, 14 SO) finished second in the voting to Haren. Burnett (3-3, 3.98 ERA, 52 SO); and Seattle closer J.J. Putz (0-0, 0.84 ERA, 10.2 IP, 9 SV, 12 SO).
