Hiram Bocachica, 31, is expected to join the team in Washington when the Padres begin a three-game series against the Nationals tomorrow and will wear No. 7. At that time, the club will announce a corresponding roster move.
The right-handed hitting outfielder has played in six games with Oakland this season, going 1-for-17 with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored and two walks. Bocachica's contract was purchased from Triple-A Sacramento on May 16 after batting .318 (41-for-129) with 11 doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 32 RBI, 27 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 35 games for the River Cats. When he joined the Athletics, he was tied for the Pacific Coast League lead in extra-base hits (21), tied for fourth in home runs and was fifth in RBI. Bocachica was on the A's 40-man roster prior to Spring Training but was designated for assignment on February 14 and released on February 22. He signed a minor league contract with the A's on February 28.
In 245 career Major League games with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2000-2002), Detroit Tigers (2002-2003), Seattle Mariners (2004) and Oakland A's (2005-2007), Bocachica has a career batting average of .212 (100-for-472) with 24 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs and 35 RBI.
